Matthew 21:12-13

New International Version (NIV)

Jesus at the Temple
12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 „It is written,” he said to them, „‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[a] but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[b]”

Wheat and chessboard problem

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wheat and chessboard problem is a mathematical problem. If a chessboard were to have wheat placed upon each square such that one grain were placed on the first square, two on the second, four on the third and so on, doubling the number of grains on each subsequent square, how many grains of wheat would be on the chessboard at the finish?

Chessboard

To solve this, observe that a chess board is an 8×8 square, containing 64 squares. If the amount doubles on successive squares, then the sum of grains on all 64 squares is:

T_{64} = 1 + 2 + 4 + cdots + 2^{63} = sum_{i=0}^{63} 2^i = 2^{64} - 1 ,

This equals 18,446,744,073,709,551,615.

This problem (or a variation of it) demonstrates the quick growth of exponential sequences.

The problem is sometimes expressed in terms of rice instead of wheat.

„Another mathematical genius says, had one cent been loaned on the first day of January A.D. 1, interest being allowed at the rate of six per cent. compounded yearly, then 1895 years later—that is on January 1, 1895—the amount due would be $8,497,840,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (8,497,840,000 decillions). If it were desired to pay this in gold, 23.2 grains to the dollar, then taking spheres of pure gold the size of the earth, it would take 610,070,000,000,000,000 to pay for that cent. Placing these spheres in a straight row, their combined length would be 4,826,870,000,000,000,000 miles, a distance which it would take light (going at the rate of 186,330 miles per second) 820,890,000 years to travel.”

Predvidjanja i prorocanstva nisu moguća, logicki niti prakticki.

TORONTO, July 22, 2011 – While holding the line on interest rates earlier this week, the Bank of Canada has signalled that rates could begin to climb later this year.

According to BMO Economics, interest rates are likely to increase in October and again in December, before pausing next summer. This will leave the Bank of Canada’s benchmark rate at 2.5 per cent by the end of 2012, meaning Canadians would benefit from looking for ways to reduce debt before rates go up.
